Best Side Hustle Ideas
1. Start a Blog
Blogging is my favorite side hustle for a few important reasons:
• It can be done part-time or full-time, depending on your goals.
• You’ll build a valuable asset that you can sell in the future.
• The income potential is virtually unlimited.
• You can start a blog about any topic that interests you (as long as other people are interested in it too).
In 2007, I launched a blog as a side project, and in 2008, it became a full-time company. I've written blogs about graphic design, photography, travel, personal finance, and other topics since then. I've made over $1 million from the sales of a few blogs.
The drawback of blogging is that results don't come quickly; they require time and work. You might not make any money for the first six months or longer if you launch a blog today. It's not a good option if you need to start making money right away, but it's good if you want to create a long-term company with great earning potential.
2. Build a Niche Website
Blogs and niche websites are similar, despite certain differences. While blogs are usually personal and readers feel a connection to the blogger, niche websites are typically impersonal. Readers are generally uninterested in or ignorant of the author of the work.
The content of a niche website will be completely focused on one topic and covered as thoroughly as possible. In addition to making money from advertising, a lot of niche websites also publish content that mentions or features products they can promote as affiliates. For example, an article titled "The 10 Best Yoga Blocks" may appear on a website dedicated to yoga.
Most, if not all, of the articles published on niche websites concentrate on a specific keyword or phrase that users are interested in, as search engines drive the majority of traffic to these types of websites.
Niche website creation offers many of the same benefits as side gig blogging. It's a fantastic option for anyone who wants to start an online business and is prepared to put in some initial work.
3. Sell Printables
You can sell a wide range of printables, including checklists, budget sheets, planners and organizers, and even amusing photo booth props.
You have two options for designing the printables: hire a freelance designer or do it yourself. You have the option to sell from your own website or open a store on Etsy.
Building up your shop might take some time, but once you have several products listed for sale, you could be able to make a sizable passive income.
4. Transcription
If you have a keyboard and an internet connection, you can work as a transcriptionist for extra money. You can earn real money for your work and enjoy the flexibility of having your own schedule.
Its amazing flexibility makes this one of my favorite side gigs. You are free to work whenever and however many hours you choose. There are many transcription jobs available, so you can make it a full-time career or a side project. If you have other responsibilities or a day job, you can easily fit the transcription work into your schedule.
5. Work as a Virtual Assistant
Working as a virtual assistant can be a great side job or even a full-time profession. Depending on the role, virtual assistants can perform a wide range of tasks. Typical duties for a virtual assistant include customer service, administrative tasks, and social media account management.
Because there is a high demand for competent assistants, you can earn a good living working as a virtual assistant on an hourly basis.
6. Rent Storage Space
You might want to think about renting if you have a hectic schedule and are searching for a way to earn some extra money without spending a lot of time starting a side business. While there are many things you can rent, for many people storage space is the most sensible and feasible option.
Are there any unutilized spaces in your garage, shed, closet, attic, or basement? Alternatively, perhaps you have an extra room you could use for storage, or perhaps a shipping container or storage unit. Neighbor is a well-liked peer-to-peer storage rental platform. Locals may pay you to store some of their belongings in the space you have available.
Because it generates mostly passive income and takes very little time, this side gig is perfect. It also doesn't call for any specific knowledge or expertise. All you have to do is locate a rental space and register for an account on Neighbor. Listing your space is free of charge, and you have complete control over how and when tenants use it.
7. Rent Out Your Truck
If you have a truck, you can easily turn it into an income-generating asset by listing it for rent on Fetch. According to Fetch, you can make up to $1,800 per month by renting out your truck. That’s excellent earning potential for a small effort.
Like the other rental options, renting out your truck is mostly passive. Fetch handles customer service, renter verification, and payment processing. All you need to do is clean the truck and make it accessible for renters. With the Fetch smart device, renters can unlock the truck with their phone, so you don’t even need to meet them to provide the key.
8. Start a YouTube Channel
Popular YouTube channels bring in a LOT of money. You can earn revenue from ad clicks, sell sponsorships that will be promoted in your videos, and create videos to promote products as an affiliate.
Starting a YouTube channel is similar to starting a blog, except you’ll be creating video content instead of written content.
9. Freelance Writing
If you need to start making money immediately, freelance writing is a better option than building your own blog. Instead of building your own blog, you can get paid to write for existing blogs that need help producing content, and there are plenty of them out there.
Being a freelance writer is a great option because you can make very good money if you’re able to land the right clients, and you’ll have a lot of flexibility in your working hours.
Although my business has been primarily focused on my own websites, I’ve done a decent amount of freelance writing over the years, and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys writing. Some of my gigs have paid more than $100 per hour worked (although I usually charge per word or article, not by the hour).
10 . Become a Delivery Driver
Several restaurant delivery services hire drivers to make local deliveries. In most cases, you can have a flexible schedule and earn extra cash whenever you’re available to work. Likewise, grocery delivery jobs are another similar option.
There are two key advantages of delivery jobs over popular ride-sharing jobs:
1. The vehicle requirements are a lot more lenient. For example, DoorDash allows you to use any car for delivery. On the other hand, ride-share driving for Uber or Lyft requires you to have a car that meets many specific guidelines.
2. As a delivery driver, you won’t have strangers riding in your car.
This is a great side hustle if you need to start making real money very quickly. There’s no need to build a business and wait months to generate revenue. You’ll be able to pick up shifts immediately and start making money immediately.
Of course, you could set up your own e-commerce site with Shopify or another platform. However, some websites allow you to create your own designs and sell shirts without stocking any inventory. Merch by Amazon and Redbubble are among the most popular, but there are plenty of others.
One of the nice things about this side hustle is that it has the potential to provide passive income once you’re established. For many people, that’s the sign of a perfect side hustle.
11. Print-on-Demand
If you're artistic, you could make your own designs for products like print-on-demand t-shirts. If you're interested in it, this could be a viable side gig even if you're not a designer. You can purchase resources and stock graphics that will handle a lot of the design work for you; just make sure to review the licensing information. Hiring a freelancer to complete the design work is an additional choice.
Of course, you could use Shopify or another platform to create your own e-commerce website. However, some websites let you make your own designs and sell shirts without having to keep any stock. Although there are many other options, Redbubble and Amazon merchandise is two of the most well-liked.
One of the nice things about this side hustle is that it has the potential to provide passive income once you’re established. For many people, that’s the sign of a perfect side hustle.
12. Proofreading
Proofreading is an excellent opportunity if you’re looking for flexible work with the potential to make good money. You’ll need to be good with grammar and have attention to detail. There’s a lot of work available, so it’s a perfect option if you have grammar skills.
13. Take Online Surveys
Online surveys are a favorite for many people for several reasons. You don’t need any special experience to start a side hustle with surveys. Anyone can do it. You can take the surveys in your spare time, and you don’t have to leave the comfort of your home.
It’s one of the best side hustle ideas to make extra money in a simple way.
Now, it’s important to set realistic expectations here. Your income potential is limited with online surveys. If you’re looking for a side hustle that can generate thousands of dollars per month or give you the potential to turn it into a full-time business, this isn’t the right fit. But if you’re looking to make an extra $100 – $300 per month with minimal disruption to your life, taking surveys could be a good option.
14. Sell Private-Label Products on Amazon
Among online retailers, Amazon is a behemoth, and you can use its enormous following to promote your own goods. Creating your own private-label brand is one of the best options. A manufacturer will be found to produce a product under your own label or branding, which you will then send to Amazon's warehouses. Amazon will then fill customer orders and ship the product to them.
Since someone else handles all of the product manufacturing and order fulfillment, this business can be operated with a low staffing level and still generate a sizable revenue.
Sounds good, doesn't it? From 2015 to 2017, my spouse and I operated a profitable private label company part-time, and we eventually sold it for a six-figure sum.
The fact that this side business typically involves an initial inventory investment with no assurance that the inventory will be sold is one of its drawbacks. Although there are some workarounds for the initial outlay, they severely restrict your earning potential. To get started, my spouse and I invested roughly $10,000, but you could get started with much less.
15. Start Your Own E-Commerce Website
Aside from selling on Amazon or other marketplaces, setting up your own e-commerce website is another option. Shopify makes all the technical aspects of it very easy and affordable. You can find products to wholesale at sites like Alibaba and AliExpress, or create and sell your own custom products.
The upside is you’ll have a lot more flexibility and control as compared to selling on Amazon or some other marketplace. The downside is you’ll need to build your own audience, so it can take some time to see results (unless you’ve got a nice budget for advertising).
16. Dropshipping
As a dropshipper, you can sell products online without carrying any inventory. You’ll fill your e-commerce website with products. When a customer places an order, it will go to the wholesaler or manufacturer, and they will ship it to the customer.
It’s a nice hands-free option, and you don’t need a large upfront investment to start a dropshipping business. Thanks to Shopify’s dropshipping capabilities, you can easily create a dropshipping business.
17. Become an Influencer
The likelihood of making money on social media sites such as Instagram and TikTok has grown along with their popularity, making the opportunities to do so more substantial. Influencer marketing is a popular way for brands to connect with consumers, and if you have a sizable and engaged fan base, you can earn a lot of money by collaborating with brands to promote them to your audience.
As an influencer, you really don't need a large following to be profitable. If their social media fans are active, even micro-influencers with smaller followings can make additional money.
You might find this to be a worthwhile opportunity if you use social media frequently.
